Tips for Golf Newbies: How to Learn the Rules

One of the best things you can do when just getting started in the game of golf is to study up on the rules so you know how to deal with most situations that arise on the course. The golf rule book might seem a little bit overwhelming at first, but it is actually pretty easy to understand and digest. Once you are comfortable with the most-commonly used rules, you should be able to play a round of golf with confidence knowing you are playing the game the right way.

Following are three different methods for quickly learning the rules of golf. You can use all just one of these methods, or a combination of all three in order to gain a better understanding of how the rules impact the play of the game as you make your way around the course.

  • Read the rule book. Picking up an official copy of the rules of golf is pretty inexpensive, and you might even get a free copy if you join your local golf club and register a handicap. Just by reading through the rule book one section at a time, you can gain a good understanding of how the rules are structured and how they should be used on the course. This reading might be a little dry and dense, but the book isn’t very long so you can take your time working through the sections.
  • Take online quizzes. Look around on the internet and you are sure to see more than a few quizzes on the rules of golf. Take a few of them, and note specifically the questions that you got wrong. Using your rule book, go back and study up on the areas that you seem to have trouble with. If you repeat this process a couple of times, you should find yourself mastering those rules tests in no time at all.
  • Watch golf on TV. As the professional golfers on TV make their way through a round, they are likely to encounter a variety of situations which will bring the rules into play. Often, the TV commentators do a good job of explaining the rules that are involved in any given situation. Just by watching a few tournaments, you will probably be exposed to some different ruling situations – and you will gain knowledge which you can put to use when you are playing your own rounds of golf.
